In like a lion and out like a lamb
‘In like a lion and out like a lamb’, my grandmother always used to remark as March got underway and thoughts turned to Spring. It used to be a common saying amongst people in my part of Yorkshire, and the country in general, but not so much nowadays.
It’s easy to forget, especially if you get an unseasonably warm week at the end of February, that March is very much still, in part, a winter month and can often catch those not suitably attired out. Often referred to as ‘The Ides of March’ the strong winds that are a common feature of the third month can wreak havoc. If the month begins with fierce gales and heavy rain it is said to ‘roar in like a lion’. Consequently as winter turns to spring those winds can fade leading to more settled conditions. Hence ‘out like a lamb’.
For gardeners it’s a useful saying as it keeps in mind tasks to do around the garden as familiar features such as Daffodils and Blackthorn come into flower. If you have a pond March is a good time to clear out any dead leaves and transplant water plants. Any leaves that have fallen into the pond during the past few months can be harmful to aquatic life as this fallen matter increases acidity which if not removed can prove a breeding ground for harmful algae.
