Digital books are convenient. You can store them on various devices and have a portable library at a touch. But, rather like the vinyl LP, there’s something about about a physical book. Wander into any bookstore and you’re greeted with that wonderful and welcoming aroma of hundreds of books drawing you in to explore the shelves. Who isn’t tempted to pull one from it’s perch and gaze at the artwork or read the rear cover?

There was a time when it seemed the physical tome was out for the count. It’s virtual opponent had all but delivered the final sucker punch as we were all seduced into the world of Kindle and tablet computers. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not some printed word Luddite ready to hammer any digital novel before it’s turned a page. I too appreciate the portability of the ebook and you can find me reading a recent download while waiting for my doctor’s appointment. He’s known for taking his time between patients!

So, ignoring the prophecy that books were an endangered medium, the printed book is alive and doing very well. A big part of this trend is down to celebrity biographies. ‘Becoming’, Michelle Obama’s biography gave sales a massive leg up when it sold over half a million copies within the space of two weeks. Sales such as this have ensured the UK book market recorded a healthy rise in sales for the fourth year on the trot. A total of 190.9 million books were sold in the UK last year alone, amounting to £1.63 billion for 2018!

Whichever you prefer, literature is very much alive, inspiring people and powering their imaginations as never before, but I can’t see an ebook making quite the same statement on the coffee table!
